Alcohol tax share by state, editable

The share of the shelf price that is excise, duty and VAT. Rough by design, and your edits are remembered. Karnataka works spirits and beer out from the bottle itself, so those two are not used there.

How the rates work
Fuel — central excise ₹21.90/L petrol, ₹17.80/L diesel, plus your state's VAT on the pre-VAT price. As of Jul 2025.
Food delivery — 5% on food and packaging, 18% on delivery and platform fees. From 22 Sep 2025.
Everyday items — GST 2.0 slabs, 0 / 5 / 18 / 40%. Prices include GST, so we work backwards from what you paid. Some items switch rate above a price; we pick from the amount.
Alcohol — no GST. State excise and VAT, by state and by type, as a rough share of the shelf price (as of May 2026, from the ISWAI share-of-price study and state price sheets) that you can edit; we remember your edits. Karnataka now charges by pure alcohol, so cheap bottles carry a bigger share than premium ones. Gujarat and Bihar are prohibition states.
Vehicles — GST 18% small cars and bikes ≤350cc, 40% larger, 5% electric, plus state road tax by price slab. Imported CBU: customs duty first, then 40% GST. Used: dealer pays GST on its margin; you pay transfer and road tax.
Property — state stamp duty and registration; 5% GST on under-construction (1% affordable).
Gold, silver — 6% customs duty inside the metal price (since 24 July 2024), 3% GST on the metal, 5% on making.
Investing — STT, stamp duty, exchange and SEBI charges, 18% GST on brokerage. Mutual fund expense ratios carry 18% GST on the fund's fee, about an eighth of the ratio.
Capital gains — equity 20% under a year, 12.5% over a year above ₹1.25L a year. Debt funds, FD interest: your slab. Gold, property, unlisted: slab under 2 years, 12.5% over. Plus 4% cess.
Salary — TDS is income tax. Professional tax is a state tax, counted with hidden tax. Change salary from any month; earlier months keep the old figures.
Other income — at your slab. Rent: 30% off first. Freelance 44ADA 50%, business 44AD 6–8%. Lottery 30% flat. Gifts from relatives, agriculture: exempt. Tax due, not deducted.
Sources: IOCL/PPAC, CBIC, state portals. Rates change; treat these as close, not exact. UPI itself carries no tax.
